"Toscoforte"

Colli Toscana Centrale IGT

The Guicciardini for centuries have cultivated Sangiovese (The undiscussed king of the viticulture in Tuscany) on the steep and sunny hills of Castello di Poppiano. At Castello di Poppiano we strongly believe that Sangiovese and Syrah are highly complementary and that a touch of Syrah contributes structure and body as well as a lovely dimension to Sangiovese in Toscoforte.

Elevation-Exposure :  220-270 m ( 720-890 ft) a.s.l. - East/-North-east
Soil :  Locally called ''Alberese'', medium textured soil deriving from calcareous conglomerates intermixed with clay, well drained.
Training System :  Cordon trained, short spur pruned.
Vines per Hectare :  4700-5300
Grape Varieties :  Sangiovese 90%, Syrah 10%
Harvest  Depending on grapes varieties: Syrah between September 10th and September 20th, Sangiovese between September 15th and October 5th.
Wine Making :  In vats at a controlled temperature of 26-28 °C (79-82°F) with maceration of 15-18 days.
Maturing :  In vats and subsequently 12 months in French Oak (allier) barriques; 3 months in bottle.
Tasting Notes :  Color: ruby color of great intensity.
Nose: complex aromas of leather with tobacco and attractive undergrowth red fruits.
Taste: smooth and robust body which well sustained by sweets smooth tannins and balanced alcohol. Long tasty finish.
